Lemuel Maynard Wiles was born in 1826 in West Perry, New York, in the Genesee Valley. A noted landscape painter in the realist tradition of the Hudson River School, he did some western landscapes, which resulted from travels in California and Colorado in 1873 and 1874. Oil on canvas in period, carved, gilt wood frame. Signed and dated l.l. "L.M. Wiles 1869". Provenance: Covington Fine Arts Gallery. Frame: 20 1/2" x 14 1/2"; canvas: 15" x 9". Good condition. The work has been restored and lined.
