This striking piece is known as a Porter's chair, Balloon chair, or Dome chair these originated in the 16th century France and England, they were designed for porters, or door keepers, who sat in the drafts of grand hall entryways, this acted as a sound and wind, and heat barrier, keeping the servant warm while they waited to admit guests. This piece features a curved, ornate woodwork, typical of the Louis XV style. 32 x 24 x 63", seat height: 17". Good condition.
