Robert Indiana "Love" wall hanging, 20th c., for Paul Smith. American artist Robert Indiana's iconic 'LOVE' motif made its first appearance on Christmas cards for the Museum of Modern Art in 1965. From there, Indiana's creation was appropriated and became a symbol of counter-culture throughout the 1960's and 1970's. This particular design focuses greatly on Paul's playful nature with the juxtaposition of stripes against graphic florals, and there is a strong sense of his British heritage with the use of the Union Jack. 39" x 39". Good condition.
