Description

Original hand-colored lithograph from John Gould's: A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, published in 1831. John Gould (1804-81) was working as a taxidermist at the Zoological Society in London when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Society's museum in the late 1820s. Based on this collection, Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species. The artist's wife, Elizabeth Gould (1803-41) made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. Prints were purchased at Haley & Steele and framed at Stanhope Framers. Frame: 23" x 28"; sight: 12 1/2" x 17". Good condition with minor foxing to paper.
